This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
